Ted Kirby the starter barely had a moment to blink before the limit group—Baker, Bender, and Rilen—bolted off the line, maintaining a scorching 35 km/h average speed, possibly fuelled by either a strong tailwind or sheer terror.
These three rode like they were being chased by rabid kangaroos and stayed clear until the final kilometre, where they were ambushed by the second scratch group of Hender, Bickerton, Gardner, O’Keefe, and Christienson.
Dazza O’Keefe, who seemed to have channelled the spirit of a hungry shark, launched an attack with 1km to go, leaving the rest floundering in his wake.
With the stealth of a ninja and the power of a freight train, Dazza surged ahead to snag first place, reminding everyone that it’s not just about strength but also about the ability to strike fear into your competitors.
Meanwhile, the scratch group, consisting of Lay and Kirby, could be spotted somewhere off in the background, pedalling solo in what we can only assume was a quest for enlightenment…or the realisation that they might’ve made some life choices they’d come to regret.
Nonetheless, Jake Lay saved the day by setting the fastest time at one-hour and 11 minutes, possibly motivated by the promise of a cold drink at the finish.
Kudos to our handicapper, who did the impossible—he got the field to come together in the last kilometre, turning what could’ve been a solo parade into an all-out dogfight to the finish. It was intense and competitive.
Upcoming Events:
Next up, we kicked off twilight racing from Palm World on Tuesday, 12 November at 6pm. Tail lights and your sense of humor are essential.
Then, on Saturday, 16 November, we’ll meet at the Tallarook pool at 2pm, where we can only hope to end with a refreshing swim…for those still standing. More likely a beer and presentations at the Tallarook Pub.
