Fletcher Campion and Tynan Rothe opened the batting and got the team off to a stable start.
Fletcher kept the bowlers honest with some big hitting when they strayed in their line and length but was caught out in the 11th over for 25.
The Rhinos lost two more quick wickets before the drinks break, which unfortunately brought Tynan undone, bowled out for 16 runs in the first over after drinks.
There was a steady loss of wickets as the game went on, with Jaxon Rothe taking on the attack to get 14 runs before being bowled by a very good delivery, leaving the Rhinos all out at 8-88.
Katamatite commenced their response and at the close of play were 0-42.
The young Rhinos travelled back to Katamatite last Saturday to defend their small total against a formidable opening batting partnership of MVCA representative players, consisting of Ryley Thompson and Archie Patterson.
Ryley and Archie settled in, and began scoring freely, hitting some beautiful cover drives, late cuts and pull shots.
Ryley eventually fell on 60 runs to a beautiful delivery from under-15s debutante Hunter Campbell.
Archie was then given out on 35 to a lightning-quick stumping from wicket-keeper Tom Marshall off Jaxon’s bowling.
The Katamatite Tigers declared on 3-170 and sent the young Rhinos in to bat, hoping to get them all out within 15 overs and therefore secure an outright victory.
Opening batters Ted Wren and Daniel Burn dug in and played beautiful defensive strokes, and both retired not out.
Coach Ross Campion gave many of his young players the opportunity to face some superb bowling from Katamatite.
The Rhinos held on, finishing at 1-39 after 15 overs with some solid, sensible batting displayed.
Campion gave the Wired Coach’s award for week one to Jaxon Rothe for some good batting and tidy bowling.
The week two That Pizza award went to Kywahn Button, who displayed good bowling skills.
He got MVCA player Cooper Mynard out with a shot popped up and caught by Tom Marshall.
The under-15 Rhinos will meet Barooga this weekend in Barooga, and look forward to continuing to improve.
