In his annual report, interim president Magnus Aitken reported on facility improvements and the success of the 2024 racing year, despite the cancellation of the Cup Day meeting following 45mm of rain.
Aitken was elected president at the meeting, with Geoff Corboy continuing as secretary and Col McMahon as treasurer.
A strong committee was also appointed for 2025, though the club continues to look for younger members to get involved, especially in roles to organise entertainment and hospitality.
In his president’s report, Aitken said it was fantastic to have large race fields and a great crowd at the Anzac Day meeting, and to receive positive feedback from owners, trainers and jockeys.
“Unfortunately, we received an untimely 45mm of rain before our Cup Day meeting and despite the valiant efforts of an army of volunteers trying all sorts of (racetrack) drying techniques, the stewards ruled the track unsafe and racing was abandoned,” he said.
However, he said the day still went ahead and was an excellent social day with plenty of positive feedback.
Throughout the year there were numerous improvements to facilities including roads, drainage and the track watering system.
There has also been installation of outside running rail, as well as padding on barriers, to improve safety for horses and jockeys.
Aitken acknowledged committee members, volunteers and sponsors who support the club and contribute “hours of work and commitment to our club and its continued development”.
He thanked former president Greg Danckert for his “enthusiasm, love of racing, passion for the Deniliquin community and strong social conscience … which have seen the club move forward under his stewardship”.
Danckert will continue involvement with the club as track manager.
“The club had a successful year in 2024 and is looks forward to continuing this trend next year,” Aitken said.
