This year, Deniliquin High School will send 16 students off to participate in the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
The Great Vic Bike Ride is an event held by Bicycle Network, raising awareness around getting people out and moving for their health.
This year is the 40th as a fundraising event.
“Two thirds of Australians don’t move their bodies enough to look after their health and happiness,” Bicycle Network says.
“And when we do move around, instead of using our bodies, too often we’re using resources that are destroying our planet.
“We need to get Australia moving around by bike. It’s cheap, easy, convenient and good for our environment.
“We want to see Australia become a nation of bike riders where our liveable communities are full of happy and healthy people pedalling.”
The Deniliquin High School team will complete a five day optional ride from Wodonga through Yackandandah, Myrtleford, Wangaratta and finishing in Mansfield.
“There are nine new riders in the team, with seven students who did the ride last year,” Laing said.
The riders have already started training every Wednesday during sport, Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
Last week’s training on Wednesday involved a long distance ride to Mayrung School, which is an 84km round trip.
“Mayrung were fantastic hosts and we were also helped by one of our parents John Nolan driving the support car,” Laing said.
The Great Vic Bike Ride will begin Saturday, November 23 and conclude Sunday, December 1.
