The singles tournament is quickly becoming an integral fixture on the intra-club calendar since being formulated a few years ago in honour of club stalwart Ray Anderson, who lost his battle with an aggressive illness while in office as club president.
It is a 2-bowl knockout tournament, with each match played over 15 ends.
At the business end of proceedings, Mark Law advanced to the final after edging out Peter ‘Chief’ Chadderton in a semi-final, while Joanne Bovell got the better of John Flisher in the other.
The final was a very even affair, with the lead changing a number of times before the score became locked at 10-all with one end to play.
Bovell saved her best till last however, when she claimed a two on the final end to clinch the well-earned victory.
The Riverina Shield on Sunday, played under pennant conditions with three games each of 10 ends, saw six teams from each of the Deni RSL, Mathoura, Barham and Deniliquin bowling clubs compete.
It was a teams competition, with sides awarded one point for a win and half a point for a drawn game.
At the end of the day, it was the Deniliquin Bowling Club who claimed the spoils with 11 points and plus 32 shots.
Mathoura and Barham both scored 8.5 points, with the former having the better shot differential to claim second place.
The Deni RSL was close behind with eight points.
The best performed side in the competition was the Deniliquin combination of Simon Chisholm (skip), Stuart Treble, David Hessel and Terry Taylor, winning all three games with plus 26 shots.
This tournament was always an annual event, but due to the COVID interruption was last played in 2019 when Deni RSL were victorious.
It should be a great lead in to this season’s pennant competition, which officially begins on Saturday, October 12.
