The Holy family from Deniliquin plan to be front and centre when Makenzie Holy - the granddaughter of Deniliquin resident Lynne Holy - steps onto the field as a vital part of the South Australian side.
Originally from Deniliquin, Makenzie’s father is Danuel Holy.
These days the family live in Mildura, where Danuel is principal of Nichols Point Primary School.
He said Makenzie’s cricketing journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and her family from Deniliquin have been an unwavering pillar of support throughout her rise in the cricketing world.
Lynne and Makenzie’s uncles Matthew and Cameron have spared no effort in backing Makenzie’s dreams and being an an integral part of Makenzie’s cricketing odyssey.
They have endured long car rides and bus trips from Deniliquin to attend live games, and view live games online when they cannot be there in person.
Makenzie, a promising leg-spin bowler, embarked on her cricketing journey in Nichols Point.
“Representing Sunraysia and Mallee Murray Suns from the age of 11, she quickly gained recognition in the local cricket scene,” Danuel said.
“In 2021, she earned a coveted spot in the School Sport Victoria 12 years and Under State team, an achievement marked by the presentation of the baggy blue cap at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“The transition to South Australia in 2022 marked a new chapter in her sporting career.
“Balancing her weekends between soccer with Fulham United FC and showcasing her talent in the SACA Women’s 2nd grade competition with the West Torrens District Cricket Club, Makenzie’s inaugural season in 2nd grade earned her the title of the best bowler, foreshadowing her meteoric rise.
“Her moment under the spotlight came when she debuted in SACA 1st grade for West Torrens at just 14, stepping into the shoes of the renowned Amanda-Jade Wellington.
“Makenzie showcased her skill by claiming three crucial wickets three games in the 2022/23 season and earned a vote in the prestigious Karen Rolton Medal.”
Based on her outstanding performance, Makenzie found herself alongside cricket luminaries in the West Torrens District Cricket Club team of the year, including Spencer Johnson, Jordan Buckingham, and Carolyn Ward, all of whom have represented Australia or Australia A.
Makenzie’s journey continued its upward trajectory with an imitation to trial for the South Australian under-16 Scorpion Squad.
After rigorous practice sessions and trial matches against the South Australia under-19 Scorpions, she secured her place in the 14-player South Australian Under 16 team for the National Carnival.“
Lynne said they are ready and excited to cheer Makenzie and her teammates on when the carnival starts on January 18.
Some of the family will attend in person, while others will watch live online.
“We are united in our support for Makenzie as she pursues her dreams on the national stage,” Lynne said.
Danuel said Makenzie and her brother Lochlan, who plays district cricket in Adelaide, share a common dream — to play a game of cricket in Deniliquin as a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for the steadfast support shown by Nanny Lynne and their uncles Matt and Cam.
