The idea was brought to fruition following a conversation between Deni Rams assistant coach Jack Tyndall and Rovers veteran Brendan Hope, as a way for the two clubs from different football leagues to get together and raise some money for their respective end of year footy trips.
The game has high stakes. Each club will put up money, with the winner taking all.
‘‘We don’t really get a chance to do this type of thing with the Rovers guys, and we all have mates in both teams. It should be a fun night,” Tyndall said.
While the Rovers seem to be holding their cards pretty tight to their chest regarding their playing team for the match, Tyndall said Rams have a mixed team of skilled and not-so-skilled cricket players.
‘‘We made a rule that no Rhinos guys are allowed to participate, to make the playing field a bit more even,’’ he said.
‘‘But we have some ex-cricketers like Ash Morris and Lochie MacDonald in our team, so it should be make for an interesting game.’’
Hope said with the Rovers and Rams being in different football competitions, it will be good to get out together and have a hit.
‘‘We are all mates, but once the game starts it will be on I reckon,’’ he said.
‘‘Our team is shaping up pretty well.
‘‘We’ve got about 12 to 13 guys who are keen to play, and we’re all looking forward to it.’’
First ball of the match will be at 5.30pm and spectators are encouraged to come along and show some support for the clubs.
The Rams will run a barbecue, and the Rovers will operate a bar.
