In addition to Deniliquin, the zone includes Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera, Finley and Corowa.
There were 160 athletes in total who were vying to qualify for the regional carnival to be held in Griffith, on their new synthetic track, on February 4 and 5.
Those finishing first and second automatically qualify, while those finishing third had to wait to see if their times/distance will get them through.
Leanne Mulham from Deni Little Athletics said the heat on Saturday did test athletes, and she gave a “shout out” to all the volunteers who helped out at events to ensure athletes could shine.
“A highlight for team Deni was the junior girls relay team who blitzed the opposition,” Mulham said.
“Sophie Eddy led the team out, handing the baton to Lotus Gallpen-Brown.
“A successful baton change to Katelyn Eddy had her leading around the bend as she then passed to her sister Matilda.
“She then took the baton across the line in first position with the Deni team cheering the girls on.”
Full results from the event were not public at the time of going to print yesterday.
