The annual regional Matchplay series finale - a Champions of Champions - was played at the Margaret Court Centre.
This event invites the top eight girls and boys in under-10s to the under-16s age groups from across the south west area of NSW.
These invites are determined by the top point scorers of each of the 10 tournaments played throughout the year, and club president Jon Gatacre said Deniliquin had other players qualify but unable to attend.
“This clearly shows the standard is amazing at the Deniliquin Junior Tennis Club, and the numbers we see each week are a testament to that also,” he said.
A round was played on the weekend between the top eight in each age group, followed by a final between the top four, to see who would continue on to the state final of champions in Sydney to compete with all the other areas in NSW.
Only the top three are awarded positions in the state finals.
After a gruelling two days of tennis with heat and high standards played, Deniliquin’s James Gatacre won the under-12s boys title against a very experienced player he’s been unable to beat all year.
Bella Knox also performed well, with a gallant runner-up finish in the under-12 girls.
A special mention to Arabella Bliss who came third in the under-14s girls, and Charlotte Gatacre who has been awarded a wildcard to play in the under-10s girls.
These four will now head to Sydney in two weeks to play the best players in NSW to fight it out in the state final.
Jack McGrillen and Toby Rae have also been invited to the next round at Sydney, as reserve players.
“The Deniliquin Junior Tennis Club would like to encourage all our players to support these RMS tournaments around the region.
“We will be hosting our very own RMS in March 2024.
“Congratulations to all the kids who competed in Albury, and good luck to Toby, James, Bella, Arabella, Charlotte and Jack good in Sydney.”
Arabella Bliss, James Gatacre and Bella Knox have all won their way through to the Sydney champions round based on their Albury performances.
