“Riverina Blues and Merit Awards are not simply about the recognition of sporting excellence but rather the recognition of the complete student, one who sees the value of an all-round education, a commitment to the true values of sport and the realisation that you don't choose to be a role model - it is thrust upon you,” Riverina Primary President Darren White said on the night.
“Our recipients are not only role models within their schools and general communities, they are positive role models.”
The awards ceremony was an opportunity to recognise the special efforts and achievements of a number of Riverina athletes from across this last year.
Special guest presenter was Jocelyn Bartram, who is the goalkeeper for the Australian women’s hockey team.
Jocelyn was also a Riverina Blue award recipient during her time as a student at Albury Public School and Albury High School.
Jocelyn presented the awards on the night and was also there to present a speech to the invited students, parents and staff.
Two of Deniliquin’s very own were, in fact, honoured at the ceremony and presented awards by Jocelyn.
Oliver Hall from Deniliquin North Public School was awarded a Riverina Sporting Blue Award for his feats as a cross country runner representing the Riverina.
“Oliver has been noted by his school as a hard-working athlete who always shows great sportsmanship when he competes,” White said.
“He has been a valuable asset to the Riverina team and will be for many years to come.”
Oliver was a cross-country star for the Riverina team, at the NSWPSSA Cross Country age 8/9 boys event.
He won the race, a whole seven seconds ahead of the second place getter.
With such high praise and performances, as well as his displays of sportsmanship, it would be no surprise to see Oliver continue to represent the Riverina in a number of sports for a very long time.
Connor is a state record holder and, not unlike Oliver, has been recognised not only for his amazing achievements, but also as a student at Deniliquin High School.
“Connor is an outstanding young student at Deniliquin High School who represents himself with distinction,” White announced at the ceremony.
“Connor is an experienced member of the Riverina athletics team who has demonstrated his ability to strive for success and uphold the values of Riverina School sport.”
Connor’s efforts in the shot put and discus events are truly remarkable.
At the NSWCHS Championships, competing against the best high school athletes around the state, Connor was able to win and place second in both of his events.
A strong second in the discus was a big effort, but even more impressive than that was Connor’s state record-breaking attempt that secured him the win in the 15-years boys shot put.
The Blue award was not the only thing Connor took home, either.
He was also awarded the prestigious Premiers Sporting Challenge Sports Scholarship, alongside three others.
The scholarships recipients are selected by the Riverina School Sports Association executive and supplied by the Premier of NSW, hence its name.
It will assist with expenses associated with attending training sessions and championships.
As Connor lives in Mathoura, it will help greatly as he continues to aim for state and national titles.
Connor also travels to Bendigo regularly to train with his coach.
