The weekend incorporated a senior triathlon, junior duathlon, and the popular Wharf to Winery swim.
The 2023 Morley Auto Group Sprint Triathlon was run and won on Saturday evening by first-time winner Lachlan Wright and back-to-back women’s victor Regan Hollioake.
On a new-look course spanning both Victoria and NSW, Wright took out the main race in a blistering time of 57 minutes and 27 seconds, 32 seconds ahead of Oscar Reid and Aiden Cuff in the overall stakes.
Wright’s Beckworth Racing teammate Georg Fellner was the winner in the 2022 race, inspiring Wright to make the trip up to Echuca-Moama from Geelong.
Meanwhile, Hollioake, from Nathalia, became just the second women’s back-to-back winner and the first since Sophie Hawken in 2004 and 2005 to accomplish the feat, finishing the course in a time of 59.25.
Five Deniliquin Triathlon & Canoe Club members took part.
Alex Hay placed sixth in the male 25-29 years division with a time of 1:13:29.
Natalie Connolly was third in the female 45-49 years division with 1:19:49 and Samara Hynes was third in the female 40-44 years division with 1:29:41.
Both competing in the female 35-39 years division, Lisa Priest finished in 1:24:19 to place fourth, with Bree Furze in eighth with 1:39:16.
Run-bike-run was the name of the game in the 2023 running of the Moama Bowling Club Junior Duathlon.
About 50 juniors tackled the short course (100m run, 3km bike, and 400m run) and long course (200m run, 6km bike, and 800m run) on Saturday morning.
Deniliquin athletes Hugo McGrillen and Elka Connolly both came away with second placings.
Hugo completed the short course in a time on 14:48 to make the podium in the male 9-10 years division.
Completing the full course in the female 13-14 years division, Elka finished in 24:47.
Jack McGrillen finished fifth in the male 11-12 years division full course with a time of 26:13.
Natalie Connolly also competed in the Wharf to Winery swim, placing 11th in the social division with a time of 36:49.
After swimming three kilometres down the Murray River, a mad dash across the shoreline in the Wharf to Winery event on Sunday was the decisive element needed to split the top finishers in a thrilling conclusion to the Multisport Weekend.
Robert Campbell and Melburnian Kate Murphy were the first of the 113 swimmers out of the Murray but were met with a muddy slog to the finish after a gruelling traverse.
In the end, it was Campbell to hit the wall first in a time of 28 minutes and 32 seconds, a mere four seconds ahead of Murphy and a fast-finishing Regan Hollioake, who rounded out the overall podium after taking out the women’s sprint triathlon a day earlier.
Campbell and Murphy pocketed a cool $500 as the first male and female superclass swimmers across the line.
