The final round was played on Monday, October 14 resulting in youngest member, Luca Macheda, claiming victory over Ashley Nicholl in another large field of competitors. Collation of this and other results for the season then resulted in David Arazuhaldzic being declared the 2024 Diggers Challenge champion with Darren Edwards and Tony Cincotta tying for second place and Heie Hansen coming in 4th.
Congratulations to Dave on his first victory in this event and placegetters on their efforts over the year.
Dave then confirmed that he is in a serious purple patch of form when he took out the final of the Club Challenge on Monday, October 21 over Tony Cincotta.
The Club Challenge is another event where monthly qualifying rounds are played, but instead of a Brownlow medal style points accumulation deciding the victor, a “double elimination” format is played for the grand final.
Dave did it the hard way when he lost his second match of the final series but fought back gallantly to defeat Tony in an extremely close contest.
Congratulations to both players, and especially David on taking out two of the bigger events in two weeks of super snooker.
The social night contest on October 16 saw ever smiling Jack Bassett cleaning up Nev Page to take the chocolates.
The club are delighted to have Jack back from uni and hopefully he will be a regular competitor over the next few months.
Mia Macheda then confirmed Nev’s regular runner up form when she claimed the social night competition of October 23 in a black ball result that was much enjoyed by both players.
The best of three frame qualifying rounds of the 2024 club championship were played on Sunday, October 27.
Tournament seedings proved accurate and Heie Hansen and Adrian Ridley will square off in the blue ribbon event final on Monday, October 28 in a best of five frame contest.
The club wish both Adrian and Heie the best of luck and look forward to an entertaining contest.
Mia Macheda has again highlighted her enormous talent and potential with a strong defence of the Victorian under 15 open (male and female) snooker title that she claimed last year.
Mia finished runner up to Austin Huang, who also took out the under 18 billiards title, in a very close final at the Victorian Billiard and Snooker Association championships, which were played on October 25 and 26.
Luca Macheda also played in the championships and performed extremely well to confirm the family strength in our sport.
