Connor - or CJ as he is known to family and friends - was competing at the Riverina Secondary Athletics Championships on Friday, July 28.
They were held at the Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct, Albury.
The previous 20 year-old Riverina record for shot put was held by Jamie Wood from Hay in 1998, with a distance of 14.23m.
Connor bested the record by more than 20cm, setting a new shot put zone carnival record of 14.46m.
Connor’s mum Kirsty Wilson said “it was just fantastic”.
“We are so proud of him,” she said.
“He is so dedicated and has goals he sets to achieve and works so hard to reach them.”
The distance Connor has thrown to break the record would qualify him for nationals, but he has a few competitions to get through to reach that destination.
He will compete next at the state championships to be held in Sydney from September 6-8.
If he progresses from there he will head to the All Schools Championships.
Success there will lead to nationals, which this year will be held in Perth.
“We are so lucky to have Australia’s number one female shot putter in Emma Burge as Connor’s coach,” Kirsty said.
“She is amazing, she has just won in Oceania.
“CJ and Emma get along like a house on fire, they are just so well connected.
“In a nice surprise she attended the athletics carnival to watch CJ compete. He was rapt; it made his day.”
In regards to how many kilometers they have to travel for Connor to reach his goals, Kirsty said “it is totally worth it”.
“If he is so dedicated and has his goals in place, it is so worth it.”
Emma said being present for Connor’s record breaking throw “really made me proud as a coach”.
“Hitting the 14.46m throw at the start of the season really shows that he’s got much more in the tank ahead of the new season,” she said.
“I thought teaching him was going to be very hard, knowing he is a teenage boy.
“He is so devoted, determined and has a really great attitude towards training, which makes my job easier.
“I think he has a huge future ahead of him but, obviously, we just take one step at a time as he is still so young.
“I believe he will be representing Australia in the next generation of throwers.”
