The Rovers were expecting a close game against a side that finished third last year, and it didn’t disappoint. Six goals was the biggest margin during the whole game. The defence worked tirelessly in and around the goal circle creating turnovers against some very accurate Waaia shooters. The midcourters moved the ball from the defenders to the shooters and put plenty of pressure when they created a turnover. The shooters were up against some very strong and clever Waaia defenders who made them work for every goal they got. A great start to the season with the team taking a narrow win.

Waaia came out firing, but the preparation the girls had done put us in a good position to respond. The centre pass conversions were strong with Brittany Edwards providing some quarters of 100 per cent accuracy. The whole court defence unit was consistent across four quarters and created many turnovers, with Jackie Thorpe taking a game high of eight clear intercepts. The high work rate and perceived pressure from the whole team were key in the win, and it was good to get a win under the belt in round one against a well drilled opponent.
Awards: Timbrr Firwood - Britt Edwards; Physiofit with Britt and Total Bliss - Jackie Thorpe.

This C-grade has not played together before, but in their first game they made a promising start to the season. The first half showed both Rovers and Waaia to be evenly matched. The game began with strong and quick passes and accurate shooting from Rovers to ensure their hard work was on the board. Some turnovers didn’t always favour the team, but they held their nerve and kept the pressure on to hold the lead by five at half time. The third quarter saw the ball move end to end with little result, and the pressure for accuracy was felt by all on the court. The final quarter was tough and both teams worked hard for every goal. An exciting game to watch as Rovers came away with the win. Jemmah Conallin was named best on court for clear and concise feeding of the ball.

C-res have started the season with an exciting 10 goal win over Waaia. The team started strong showing confidence in their passes, steady play through the midcourt and accurate shooting from goalies Lauren Butcher and Mollie Leetham. The defenders worked hard for each intercept and rebound, working for every turn over in the first half. Waaia found their rhythm in the third quarter as play turned goal-for-goal, but with a team effort Rovers settled and held the lead to celebrate a win. A great way to begin the season, and for Alicia Collisson who was named best on court for great use of two hands and voice on the court.

A see-sawing start saw some nervous passing from both sides. There was strong defensive pressure from Reagan Behsman with some stellar two handed intercepts. Shané Bothma displayed determination and grit and picked off many passes. The girls found their groove and Paige Brown and Jarrah Fitzpatrick dominated the shooting circle, and at half time were up by one goal. The girls asserted themselves in the third quarter and furthered the lead.

From the outset, the girls displayed a solid defensive strategy that kept Waaia on their toes. The defenders worked together seamlessly, communicating effectively and using skills to anticipate the movements from the Waaia players. Our shooters were also able to capitalise on these opportunities, putting points on the board. Well done girls on your first game together.

What a blistering start to the season for the versatile under-13s. Ava Braybon showed style at both ends of the court. Nina Glowrey, Zoe Bassett, Zoe Harvey and Stella Andrews were a powerhouse in defence. They only conceded one goal until the final quarter. The attack was fierce with Georgia Danckert, Lara Horne, Amelie Bulmer and Eva Maher working new combinations well. Coaches Lucy Horne and Matilda Glowrey were impressed with the girls’ foundation skills and are excited to see the skill progression throughout the season.
Awards: Aria & Harper - Amelie Bulmer; Subway - Ava Braybon; McDonald’s – Georgia Danckert.
Under 11s: Not scored.
It was a great first game, putting everything we’ve practised at training in to the game day play. There was great team work down the court. Indi Conallin, Georgie Tweed, Aleaha Leetham and Issy Didcock were on fire in the goal ring. Maddy Danckert, Meg Meharry and Khoa Unwin worked hard in defence getting many turnovers.
Awards: McDonald’s – Indi Conallin; Subway – Issy Didcock.
