Round 8 of the Tallangatta and District Football and Netball League saw the Rutherglen Cats travel East to Wodonga to take on the Wodonga Saints.
The large crowd at Martin Park was blessed with another sunny autumn afternoon, providing perfect conditions for football.
Before the game, the senior group welcomed club legend Darren Hatton into the changerooms to present Jayden Baldwin with jumper #34 for his first game of senior football. Jayden was rewarded with selection on Thursday evening after a strong preseason and great form in the reserves in the early part of the season.
From the opening bounce of the first quarter, co-coach Dylan Van Berlo, who is putting together an outstanding individual season, took control in the ruck to give the Rutherglen midfield brigade first use, ultimately resulting in a number of inside 50 entries.
Ruckman turned forward Tom Kilpatrick looked ominous working alongside key forward Jyda House. These two, taking multiple strong marks inside 50, kicked the team’s three goals for the quarter. Although Rutherglen controlled territory for the quarter, inaccurate kicking had the Rutherglen team 2 points down.
The score at quarter time, Rutherglen 3 goals 5 behinds 23 points to Wodonga Saints 4 goals 1 behind 25 points.
The second quarter belonged to the Rutherglen team. For the quarter, Rutherglen kicked 6 goals 3 behinds to Wodonga Saints 0 goals 1 behind. Ruckman Dylan Van Berlo, in conjunction with rover Jarryd Hatton and wingman Ben Pleming took control across the centre of the ground, sending the ball inside 50 on multiple occasions to the advantage of the forward group of James Tanner, Jyda House and Tom Kilpatrick, with these three making the most of the forward 50 supply.
For the quarter, Jarryd Hatton had 8 disposals, 4 inside 50 entries and kicked one goal. Further to this, Jyda House had four goals to his name for the first half. The score at the main break, Rutherglen 9 goals 8 behinds 62 points to Wodonga Saints 4 goals 2 behinds 26 points.
After the half time break, the team continued their form from the second quarter through the third quarter.
Braeden Hatton, Bennett Thomas and Jamie Seymour were rock solid in defence, incepting the ball and connecting well with the midfield group who were providing the forward group with scoring opportunities.
Caleb Andison and Tommy Allison played great quarters, applying high levels of pressure around the ball. In the third quarter, Tom’s hard work was rewarded with his second of three goals for the game. At the end of the third quarter, Rutherglen had a lead of 48 points. Rutherglen 13 goals 10 behinds 88 points to Wodonga Saints 6 goals 4 behinds 40 points.
The final quarter finished as an arm wrestle with both sides scoring two goals for the quarter. The Rutherglen team played the final quarter with one active rotation on the interchange bench, Mitch Cofield and Jarryd Hatton resting sore bodies in preparation for a big game next weekend against Yackandandah at Barkly Park.
The highlight for the Rutherglen team in the final quarter was the second goal of the game from second game player Archer Colvin, getting on the end of a chain of clean ball movement from the Rutherglen team.
Reserves
A battle was assured with 6th place up for grabs, Rutherglen couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities up forward early giving Wodonga the lead at quarter time. The Cats kicked the first with Wodonga putting three more on the board. After a rev up the boys came out firing in the 3rd kicking 4 goals to Wodonga’s 2. Unfortunately, with injuries to a few players the boys ran out of legs in the last quarter

Rutherglen faced their biggest test taking on the Wodonga Saints at their home ground. Wodonga sit at the top of the ladder, however Rutherglen got off to a good start with Max Chandler kicking the first goal. Wodonga clawed back, and scores were level at quarter time.
The Cats were struck an early blow losing Aaron Lewis-Carmichael to injury, however Hugo Poole stood up and delivered his best game of the year. Wodonga had a small lead at the main break. Due to some hard work by the midfielders and the back line standing up, led by Jayke O’Malley and assisted by Liam Colvin, Seth Goodman and Lucas Zani, scores were level at three quarter time.
It was only in the last term that Wodonga pulled away, but our team can hold their heads high with a strong effort all day.
Next week our Cats play an in-form Yack, so head on down to Barkly Park to see our up-and-coming future Rutherglen stars.

Netball
A Grade
The girls started off strong against the =Saints, with the scores being evenly balanced with goals being scored at both ends.
By the end of the first quarter scores were even, unfortunately in the second quarter we had a few consistent errors which led to the ball being turned over to the Saints, which gave the opposition a chance to take the lead, a change was made in the goal ring with Jess Ryan coming on play her first game in A grade, this made the defence work harder and opened our attacking options more effective.
In the second half with a change of positions we intercepted a number of balls in defence, attacked with more confidence and played some excellent attacking netball with both our mid courts working well together to get the ball into our shooters and the team also intercepted the ball on a huge number of occasions when we all upped our defensive pressure in the middle of the court.

Tough game on Saturday with the girls struggling to get into their normal rhythm. Were some good passages of play in each of the four quarters, but just wasn’t our day.

Although today the girls were up against a tough opposition the team played some sound netball throughout this game.
Defensively we were particularly strong throughout the game and as a result were able to turnover the ball on a number of occasions, violet, Jordan and Elle often intercepting the ball in there attacking end, passing decisions in our attacking play let us down during the first half and the hard work of intercepting was often lost by the opposition taking back possession. when the girls really took on board feedback about passing selection and retaining possession in the second half of the game and when we gave the ball with confidence play flowed much better and showed the netball this team is more than capable of playing.

Saturday, we travelled to Wodonga and we knew we were up against a strong U15 side. Our defence once again were amazing and really gave it their all, all day. Just need to improve on and keep building our attack in goals more.

It was always going to be a tough game against the team currently sitting on top of the ladder.
Despite the very tall opposition the Cats were up for a challenge and saw an opportunity to work on driving forward to get the ball, not crowding the spaces and getting their passes out in front. The team combined well for some of their best netball this season.
Great work Cats it was a fantastic team effort, keep working hard at training!
