Winning the toss on day one, the Rhinos elected to bat.
Tynen Rothe and Fletcher Campion defended well for the first five overs, before Tynen was bowled for three by one of the better bowlers in the MVCA.
Fletcher was caught behind not long after, for 17, after playing his usual damaging hitting.
The change of bowling attack brought about some steady scoring, with Jacob Holschier topping the scorecard with 40 runs.
He was ably supported by Tom Marshall with 16 runs.
Unfortunately, Barooga brought their gun bowlers back in and quickly cleaned the tail up for only three runs leaving the Rhinos all out for 109 after 35 overs.
Barooga then had to survive four overs, in which the Rhinos’ opening pair of Darcy Finn and Fletcher Campion challenged the batsmen.
With one over to go, and the batsmen shutting down, the Rhinos brought on spinner Chance Bennett.
It nearly worked, but a caught and bowled opportunity was put down leaving Barooga 0-11 at the close of play.
Day two was quite warm and windy, certainly not good conditions for bowling and fielding.
It wasn’t until the 16th over that Archie Beehag managed to break the opening partnership with a well-pitched ball.
Barooga went on to pass the Rhinos’ score in the 22nd over before running away with the game, finishing with 235 runs.
The young Rhinos faltered under the conditions, unfortunately dropping seven catches and bowling 50 extras.
The best of the bowlers was Chance Bennett with 2-16 of four overs.
Tynen Rothe was very economical 0-9 off four overs and Fletcher Campion had two maidens and 0-16 off six overs.
The Rhinos now go on to play another two-dayer, this time against Tocumwal.
Day one will be at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park this Saturday.
