Around the Greens

Early days yet and the club hope to get more points on the board as the season progresses and players become match fit.

Tunga Bowls are at home to Oven’s and Murray newcomers, Commercial, who will travel from Wodonga.

Saturday A3s achieved only two points in a disappointing all-round match against Wodonga, who played the greens better than Tunga. 63 to 94 shots.

Green was not rain affected just very windy. Well done to Smav, Nob, Winners and Phillip on their 7 shot win. Tunga Bowls journey to Bright on Saturday, hopefully in a bus with some “get up and go” otherwise we might as well have a sleepover.

Thanks to Tungamah players for providing a terrific afternoon tea to share.

The scribe doesn’t understand why all clubs can’t do the same, understand about RSL rules but all other clubs players could make a sandwich.

Saturday B1s played Wangaratta on a heavy track after the rain, also coming home with just two points, 45 to 61 shots.

Home to Myrtleford on Saturday. Hopefully we will soon start to see some positive results.

Thursday night practice saw some more coming for a roll and to enjoy the social side.

Yarrawonga Bowls

Social bowls:

Monday 2-4-2 - saw 24 players competing with the winning team being Mick Reilly and Peter Young, whilst Gary Presnell and Sue Middleton were the successful runners-up.

Ray Butler and Gary Lovell were smiling and were pretty happy after winning the jackpot of $112.

Wednesday 3 Bowl Triples - was cancelled as the Ulysses RV Group was visiting the club.

It was a busy day, with the weather turning on a perfect sunny day and 68 bowlers in total playing.

From all reports they thoroughly enjoyed the day and Yarra Bowls had many helpers who ensured the day was so successful. Thanks to Glenda Woods whose beautiful floral arrangement of gorgeous roses and greenery, added a colourful touch to the table and along with all the delectable, luscious looking salads provided by the ladies it all looked superb.

Consequently, there were many admiring compliments.

Pennant season - is well underway now and last Tuesday’s midweek games saw the A1s travel to Corowa R.S.L and although Yarra Bowls didn’t win overall, Ros King, Gary Murnane, Stephen Day and Jason McCloy had a good win scoring 20 shots to 12.

B1s - played at home to Milawa and had a very good win with all teams getting up to win and at close of play winning 77 shots to 40.

Chris OMeara, Judith Wendell, Ray Butler and Mick Crawford were successful winning 32 shots to 14.

B2s - travelled to Wangaratta/Wareena and had a very good win overall winning 74 shots to 50 and scoring 12 points to 2.

Best team on the day was June Binental, Ken Smith, Ray Sheridan and Noel Owen who had a good win of 14, defeating their opposition 28 shots to 14.

Weekend pennant saw A1s - playing YMGCR in a very closely contested match with YMGCR being the eventual winners winning 78 shots to 75.

Ros King, A Dodman, Gary Murnane and Stephen Day had an excellent win scoring 26 shots to 6.

A4s - played at home against North Albury where the game resulted in a draw with each team scoring 80 shots. Winning team on the day was Jimmy Barnes, Joe Borg, Tony Forrestal and Neil Hocking winning 24 to 17.

B1s - played at home against Moyhu and were narrowly defeated by Moyhu 55 shots to 61. The team of Noelene Borg, Gwen Maddox, Jules Allen and Jock McQualter had a very close game eventually resulting in a draw of 17 points to each team.

B2s -played at home, managing a win against Corowa Civic 62 shots to 55. Graeme Thomas, Kay Ross, Lisa Burnham, Maurice Lee and L Evans had an easy win of 30 shots to 12.

A big thank you to Kay Ross who helped out by filling in until Lisa Burnham arrived, having been held up with a late train’s arrival.

The club all wish Di Day and Kim Silver the very best for speedy recoveries from their respective ailments. Hope to see you both around soon and feeling better.

Club Mulwala Bowls

Midweek Pennant – The first week of Tuesday Pennant, and three wins by the mid-week teams.

The highlight of the day was Kay Smith instigating the players singing the “Club Mulwala” victory song after the days play.

A2’s top of the ladder, A3’s top of the ladder and the B2’s second on the ladder.

Results - A2’s - Club Mulwala 67 shots, 14 points defeated YMGCR 54 shots, 0 points.

A3’s - Club Mulwala shots 79, points 14 defeated Yackandandah shots 46, points 0.

B2’s - Club Mulwala shots 80, points 12 defeated Corowa Civic (1) shots 48, points 2.

Weekend Pennant - The A4’s had their first win for the season and are sitting 5th on the ladder. Club Mulwala shots 87, points 16 defeated Wangaratta shots 7, points 2.

Best rink was (S) Stan McIntosh, (3) Geoff Mitshell, (2) Peter Humpherys, (l) Lew Matthews. Looking forward to playing Benalla next week.

The B2’s just lost to Myrtleford. Club Mulwala shots 58, points 3 to Myrtleford shots 60, points 11.

The best rink (S) Wade McPherson, (3) Faye Cook, (2) Heie Hansen, (L) Ray Tovey. Sitting 4th on the ladder, the team is looking forward to playing St. James nest week.

21UP Championship - Games are well under way. The grand finale for both the Men’s and Ladies competition is hoped to be played by the end of October.

Club Championships - A sheet is on the club board for players to add their names to compete in the Club Championships.

The competition is expected to begin early November. The Ladies and Men’s winners of this will go onto represent Club Mulwala Bowls at the Ovens and Murray League Championships.

Pennant Training - Training is held each Thursday from 2pm. All pennant players are urged to attend. This is a great opportunity to seek advice and refine your bowling skills.

The selection committee were very pleased to have over 30 players attend training last week.

A hotly contested game of 2 bowl triples was played as part of the training. Friends became enemies on the green. The afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended.

Saturday morning competition - During the pennant season a bowls game is held each Saturday morning from 9.30am.

This ensures every player who has made the commitment to playing in the Pennant season will get a game every week.

Geoff Mitchell the clubs coach is running the Saturday morning matches at Club Mulwala, the competition is also ideal for bowlers who do not want to travel to play, or do not like playing bowls on a hot Saturday afternoon.

Winning players take home Club Mulwala Vouchers and cash. The matches are a great opportunity for the clubs’ players to increase their skills and hopefully impress the selection committee.

Please have your name on the players list by Friday afternoon to ensure a game.

YMGCR Bowls

Mid-week pennant

The A1s are yet to fire a shot due to having players away on State duty. Their first outing for the season, is this coming Thursday, October 24, against Kiewa, at Kiewa.

Good luck to all A1 players.

The A2s first game was an away game against Club Mulwala. The Mulwala side came away with the win, getting over the line 67 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 54 shots and 0 points.

Going down oh so narrowly to their Mulwala opponents were the rink of Greg Fisher (L), Judy Leeson (2), Peter Lidegrwood (3), and Allan Goudge (S), who lost by one shot; final rink score YMGCR 19 to Club Mulwala 20 shots.

Also battling hard for the golf club all game, were Bill Jenkins (L), Vicki Withers (2), Ian Keat (3), and Neil Loveridge (S) who lost narrowly 24 shots to Club Mulwala 27 shots. The A2s next entertain Myrtleford at home.

At this stage, they are 8th place on the ladder, but there is a lot of pennant in front of them and plenty of matches to turn the ship around.

Wednesday social bowls

The new format for Wednesday social continues to go from strength to strength, with 32 bowlers enjoying the fine conditions last Wednesday.

Winning first prize, and pocketing $120, and a drink card each, were the team of Ross Lloyd and Chris Horne.

Second prize went to Bill Jenkins and Terry Baxter who shared $60. The consolation prize for the losing rink went to Greg Fisher and Les Wilson, who shared $30.

The first lucky number prize of $20, went to Rob Lidgerwood. The second lucky number prize of $10, went to Jill Lamson.

Weekend pennant

The A1s hosted Yarrawonga in what was a game that generated quite a bit of pre-game conjecture and interest considering the number of YMGCR alumni that are representing Yarrawonga this season.

In a close fought game, befitting all the pre-game speculation, it was YMGCR who won the day; YMGCR 78 shots and 14 points to Yarrawonga 75 shots and 4 points.

Winning well for YMGCR were the rink of Laureen Smith (L), Colin Withers (2), Rob Hummel (3), and Ray Irvine (S), who bested their opponents 29 shots to 17 shots.

Also winning with a leg in the air were Ian Febey (L), Ray Brown (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Gary Presnell (S), who won 25 shots to Yarrawonga 11 shots.

YMGCR are now in 6th spot on the ladder and next week travel to Myrtleford, for what, in recent years has been a tough essay.

The A2s undertook the long drive to Swanpool and were made short work of by the home side; Swanpool 96 shots and 16 points to YMGCR 56 shots and 2 points.

Securing the valuable 2 points for YMGCR were the rink of Les Wilson (L), Kerry Kinnane (2), Vic Brincat (3), and Neil Loveridge (S), who beat their opposition 21 shots to 20 shots.

On the positive side of the ledger, the A2s are in 4th spot on the ladder and next week travel to Benalla.

The A5s blazed a new trail when they travelled to Commercial Club for the first time. However, the hosts were in no mood to extend the welcome mat and won well, 79 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 49 shots and 0 points.

Keeping their opponents on their toes all afternoon, were the rink of Doug McTier (L), Gavin Borwick (2), Neville Coleman (3), and Ross Lloyd (S), who went down by the barest of margins 18 shots to Commercial Club 19 shots.

YMGCR are in 6th place on the ladder and next week entertain Dederang at home.
