That is what Alex Hay has outlined for his next 12 months as senior coach with the Deniliquin Rovers Football Club.
Confirming he had re-signed with the club a week ago, Hay said he is optimistic about the end to this season, and about what can be achieved in the next 12 months.
“It’s quite unique to have a group that’s been together for the best part of three to four years, and I think that cohesion is why it’s been so special.
“There are certainly areas of our game that need refinement over the off season.
“We may look to add some experience on different lines, but my mantra to the players has been to trust the process.
“It is very cliche I know, but that’s what we’ll stick to moving forward.”
Hay said it did not take much convincing to stay on with the Rovers in the coaching role.
“I had met with the club over the last few months to assess the direction that we were heading, and decided that what we have been building over the last five or so years is really exciting.
“It’s a big job and a lot required week-to-week, but I’ve had fantastic support from John Glowrey, Josh Bode, Anthony Joss and Craig McCulloch, not to mention the supporters at the club who have made it very enjoyable.
“Also my partner Chelsea MacDonald sort of gave me the all clear. It’s a fair burden on her also throughout the year, and she has been extremely supportive.
“The playing group has shown some tremendous growth over the past two years in particular, and it’s given me great pleasure to help foster that.
“The younger players who have come through this year have blown me away and I’m really excited at the prospect of continuing to work with them into next year, so sticking around again was an easy decision for me.”
Junior development has been a strong focus for the Rovers in recent seasons, which Hay said paints an exciting picture for senior football with a “focus on our home grown talent”.
“That’s started with the work that our coaches have put in with Pete Wills and Ben Cowley in the fourths, then Chris Maher and Ray Murphy in the thirds, providing an environment where these players feel valued and want to improve at the club.
“I’m just fortunate that we’ve had the opportunity to continue that journey into senior football.
“I’m extremely fortunate to be a part of such a great club and very grateful at the opportunity to lead again in 2024.
“I’d like to thank John and the committee for the reappointment and showing faith in me to go again. I hope that I can do the club justice and return the favour.”
