The injury was announced by the Port Adelaide Football Club on Tuesday.
It follows a spate of concussions across the past couple of seasons for the key forward, who only recently signed a new deal to stay with Port Adelaide.
Marshall had been performing well before being sidelined with this new injury, going through preseason well and being cleared of the concussion worries.
He told the Pastoral Times he had been feeling good.
“I was tracking along really well prior to Christmas,” he said.
“I was able to get through a lot of training with my concussions getting the all clear.
“It’s the best I have felt, running and strength wise.”
Marshall said he heard the Achilles rupture, but he didn’t know that’s what it was at the time.
“It happened in a small drill. I went to take off and pushed off my left foot, then heard a really loud ‘pop’.
“I thought someone had tripped me or kicked me.
“But I looked around and no-one was close, so I knew something was wrong.”
An Achilles injury has traditionally kept an AFL footballer on the sidelines from anywhere between six and 12 months, which may mean Marshall misses the entire 2025 season.
It will have a knock-on effect on the forward set-up of the Port Adelaide Football Club.
With Charlie Dixon finished with his AFL career after retiring, the club doesn’t have many options up forward.
Marshall said while he may be sidelined, he would continue to play a role in the club.
He said he looks forward to the opportunity of getting to work with the other forwards while on the sidelines.
“Practice matches and the season isn’t too far away, it will come quickly, and I look forward to watching that.
“There are also a few forwards I can work alongside to help them out.”
Marshall said his goal would be to get back playing as quickly as possible, but sees a long road ahead.
He’s already had surgery on his Achilles, so the first step will be the recommended rest and recovery before he can start moving around a little more.
“I had surgery on Wednesday morning, and was in and out of the hospital quite quickly.
“In the first six weeks you can’t do much at all. I’m in a moon boot to rest, and then we will sort out what the plan is afterwards.”
When out of the moon boot, ongoing recovery may take another 24 weeks.
It means at the earliest, Marshall might be able to take to the field in the middle to back end of the 2025 season.
