Member for Murray Helen Dalton this week singled out the efforts of Coby Smith, Tyron Ross-Garden and Kobi Baxter in a community recognition statement.
The trio of Deniliquin High School students are pioneers in a school based apprenticeship in conservation and ecosystems management.
It will see them working with a series of local organisations throughout this year.
"I would like to recognise Coby Smith, Tyron Ross-Garden and Kobi Baxter, proud Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa young leaders, and the first students to undertake a local program aiming to build the skills and understanding to responsibly care for and work on country,“ Mrs Dalton said.
“The program, a collaboration between Deniliquin High School, TAFE New South Wales, Murray Local Land Services, New South Wales National Parks and the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre involves undertaking a Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, and utilising these skills on Country.
“Being the first participants in the program, not only are they furthering their education, but they are supporting a program that can improve the outcomes and opportunities for young people, particularly Indigenous men.
“I would like to thank these organisations for their work in establishing this program, and I wish Coby, Tyron and Kobi the best of luck as they continue their work in their traineeship.”
