Lake Nillahcootie is currently under a blue-green algae warning as wind gusts disperse algae scum downstream.
G-MW has reported varying algae levels in the Broken River, prompting further testing over the coming days.
Benalla’s drinking water hasn’t been affected.
However, G-MW customers and the public downstream of Lake Nillahcootie should monitor their water supply and be on the lookout for scum in coming days.
Blue-green algae naturally occurs in waterbodies and contains toxins harmful to humans and animals.
Algae contact can cause rashes, sore eyes, ears and nose.
If swallowed it can cause nausea or vomiting.
Precautionary measures recommended by G-MW include avoiding contact with the water for people and pets, washing affected skin immediately with clean cold water if contact occurs, seeking alternative water supplies for stock and pets and refraining from using affected water for cooking, drinking, washing or showering.
Boiling the affected water does not make it safe for these purposes.
It is impossible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels, but G-MW will continue to monitor levels in collaboration with various agencies.
