Current lockdown restrictions have meant usual services cannot take place.
And while some churches have kept going using Zoom or other platforms, St Paul’s Anglican Church Archdeacon Wayne Sheean (pictured) wanted to do something more.
He will lead a non-denominational service this Sunday, which will be livestreamed online.
Archdeacon Sheean said the idea came out of a discussion with Tracey McDaid from Riverina Funerals, in which he expressed he was looking for a way he could still connect with the local community.
‘‘We were chatting and I was saying how I was saddened by the church services not being permitted,’’ the Archdeacon said.
‘‘This time it’s hit home more in Deni, as it found restrictions found their way into the regions.
‘‘People are at home wondering, so I wanted to reach out in some way.
‘‘Tracey gave me call back later saying they host a livestream there.
‘‘They have the equipment to facilitate that, which we don't have at the church.
‘‘It was Tracey’s initiative, so I am very thankful to her.
‘‘It will be a non-denominational service. So it’s for all people.
‘‘There will be a few prayers, Bible readings and songs for people to sing along to in their lounge rooms.
‘‘Families can come together.’’
And the message shared will about taking care of yourself and others during this time, says the Archdeacon.
‘‘ It will also touch on being careful and sensible, and thinking of those around you.
‘‘It will include some verses about this where Jesus asks for us to do the right thing.’’
Most importantly, it’s about continuing a sense of community.
‘‘It’s an opportunity to reach out, so people are not alone and can have a sense of prayer.
‘‘We all can’t gather, so this is a way we can do it.’’
And with lockdown extended, similar sessions may be held in coming weeks.
In the meantime, Archdeacon Sheean urged anyone who needs to talk to reach out to him, their own church or someone else who can help.
‘‘If you are feeling lonely or in need you can contact ministers in the region. Please reach out; my brothers and sisters are happy to speak with you.’’
The livestream for this Sunday’s service will be available on the the Riverina Funerals Facebook page.
The service will take place from 11am, and will run for about 30 minutes.
