Vesak is the most important Buddhist festival, marking the birth, enlightenment (Nirvāna), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
It is held on the full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, which usually falls in May. This celebration represents a time for Buddhists to reflect on Buddha’s journey and teachings.
“Vesak Day is about people supporting people,” Buddhist Association of the Goulburn Valley president Sam Atukorala said.
“It’s also an incredible opportunity to come together and reflect collectively, as a whole.”
Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, Nepal, around 563 BCE, Buddha left his comfortable royal life to explore and understand the world’s suffering through meditation and a humble lifestyle.
Vesak Day is a time to reaffirm commitment to his teachings, marked by acts of kindness and reflection.
“Whether you are Buddhist or not, this celebration represents an opportunity for our community to share our blessings and support others,” Mr Atukorala said.
Prayers will be led by the Venerable Phra Satit Thitadhammo, general secretary of the Buddhist Federation of Australia.
Celebrations will include chanting and meditation, food sharing and a vibrant gathering that fosters a sense of connection and unity.
Queen’s Gardens will even undergo a mini makeover thanks to flowers, lanterns, candles and a Buddha statue.
Initiated in 2015 in Shepparton by the local Buddhist community and the Buddhist Association of the Goulburn Valley, the Vesak Festival has become a beloved event.
Greater Shepparton City Council, Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District, People Supporting People, Shepparton Interfaith Network, Victoria Police and the local Buddhist community have supported the festival over the years.
The festival highlights the region’s dedication to multiculturalism and the peaceful values of Vesak.
