Understanding diabetes with Infinity Pharmacy

Pharmacist Josh Custodio and senior pharmacy assistant Kylie Martin showcase the range of blood glucose meters and diaries.

Infinity Pharmacy is using Diabetes Week as an opportunity to educate the community on the condition.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the glucose in the blood, it can either be due to the bodies ability or inability to produce or use insulin properly. The condition affects 1 in 20 Australians, according to statistics taken back in 2021.

The theme of Diabetes Week in 2024 is ‘Unite in the fight for Tech’, placing the spotlight on the importance of being prepared with the right technology in your diabetes journey.

Infinity Pharmacy, previously Eric Sim Pharmacy, is getting on board with the week.

As a partner of the National Diabetes Service Scheme, you can head to the pharmacy to exchange your blood glucose meters for new ones.

The pharmacy is also working particularly hard on education and breaking down of stigma surrounding people getting a diabetes diagnosis.

Staff can show you how the blood glucose meters work.

And if you don’t have a meter of your own to test your blood sugar at home, the team can also assist with that.

An important tool for any diabetes sufferer is a blood glucose diary, allowing you to keep track of and keep on top of your own health journey - it could well save your life.

It also pays to know the signs and symptoms of diabetes.

For type one diabetics, it can present as extreme fatigue, extreme thirst, sudden unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting and constant hunger.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, the first port of call should be to your local GP.

For existing diabetics, nutrition support is also available at the pharmacy on Mondays, and pharmacists are available every day of the week.
