Since joining Intereach Family Day Care in 2005, Vicki has made a remarkable impact on the lives of hundreds of children and families, while building connections that have stood the test of time.
She is now caring for the youngsters of the children she once looked after — a full-circle moment that speaks volumes about the trust families place in her.
Because even after two decades, the heart of her work remains the same.
“Making a difference in a child’s life is what I love most,” Vicki said.
“When parents pick up their child and know they’ve had a great day — that’s everything.”
Alex Nisbet, who was once in Vicki’s care as a child and now entrusts her own children to her, couldn’t agree more.
“When I was pregnant, I said ‘If they can’t go to Vicki’s, I’m not going back to work’. Almost three years on, we’re still lucky to have her,” Alex said.
“My son wakes up every day and says, ‘Bick’s, go in the car to Bick’s’. That says it all — he’s happy, safe, and comfortable. We’d be lost without Vicki.”
For Vicki, it’s the joy of seeing children learn and thrive that keeps her going.
“Watching children grow into their unique selves, seeing the friendships they form — some of which have continued into adulthood — it’s incredibly rewarding,” she said.
“The unlimited imagination I get to witness every day through play is just magical.”
One moment that stands out for Vicki is being asked to be the godmother of a child she had cared for from a baby through to age four.
“Being a Family Day Care educator is more than a job. It’s a passion and the lifelong friends I have made over the years have been invaluable,” Vicki said.
Over two decades, Vicki has seen plenty of changes in early childhood education — from hand-written paperwork to digital tools, and children bringing their own lunches to now providing nutritious meals herself.
Vicki’s willingness to embrace change is one of her many strengths, according to Intereach Family Day Care program manager Rebecca Fitzpatrick.
“In the ever-changing world of childcare, Vicki takes it in her stride,” Rebecca said.
“Whether it’s a new approach, new technology, or new expectations, she handles everything with a can-do attitude — always keeping the children at the centre.
“Her incredible positivity also stands out. Vicki always brings a warm, bright energy to her work. No matter what challenges come her way, she faces them with a smile.”
Rebecca said Vicki’s contribution had left an indelible mark on the community.
“Vicki’s impact on families is immeasurable. She’s more than a caregiver — she’s a role model, a confidant, and a constant source of kindness,” she said.
Vicki said being part of the Intereach community had played a key role in her journey.
“The team at Intereach are so supportive, helpful, and just a phone call away. I couldn’t do my job without them,” she said.
“To anyone considering becoming a Family Day Care educator with Intereach, if you have a genuine love for children and want to make a difference, just do it. The rewards are immeasurable.”
