Toc students speak from the Heart

Students from Tocumwal’s Sacred Heart Primary School took on the Lions Australia Junior Public Speaking Competition last week, giving students the opportunity to practice their public speaking abilities.

The competition is a means of developing and continually growing students’ abilities in public speaking, sometimes even offering an opportunity for the most quiet and reserved children to be able to step out in front of their peers and present.

The competition has run for over 10 years beginning in 2007 in the Koondrook-Barham region.

Targeted at students in Years 3-6, schools run their own competitions with winners then going on to compete at zone and district levels.

The Year 3/4 age group were to present speeches on their favourite book or fairytale character, while Year 5/6 competitors were asked to deliver a speech on the most influential person in their life.

At Sacred Heart School Tocumwal, Rose Blackbourn was the winner in the Year 3/4 section.

She was able to narrowly beat out second place winner, Savannah Ross.

Eliza Wraight was the runner-up in the Year 5/6 competition, while Rose Wiles was the outright winner with a speech about her godfather Rob.

The students will now prepare themselves to compete against Tocumwal Public School’s top speakers, with the winners to go on to represent Tocumwal Lions at the zone finals.
