It was a dreary morning for early players in the first round of the championships on Saturday, though the conditions improved slightly during the afternoon.
Thomas fired a three under par 69, to be four shots ahead of Thomas Bull on 73, with Vince Kelly in third place on 76.
Leading B-grade is Neil Boswell on 82 from Gary Stephens and Ross Pogonoski on 86; in a tight C-grade contest Peter Thompson on 92 is a shot clear of Norm Purtill with Bryan Bennett and Ron Turner a further shot away, and in D-grade Geoff and Adrian Mulham hold the top two places, with Geoff in front by four shots.
In the women’s championships, Vicki Brunker had a first round 80 to hold a four shot lead over Pauline Davis.
In B-grade Ali Ferguson had an opening round of 98, leading by a shot to Fiona Milward and Jayne Hood, in C-grade Ann Bull with 102 has a solid seven shot lead over Yvonne Holmes, and in D-grade Sue Butcher likewise has a seven shot lead over youngster Rivah Taylor.
The second round of the championships will be completed tomorrow.
Last Saturday was also a medley stroke event. A-grade winner was Thomas Bult net 68 from runner-up Neil Boswell 71; B-grade Gary Stephens 73 from runner-up Marg Rothwell 74, and C-grade Fiona Milward 72 from runner-up Geoff Mulham 73.
In last Thursday’s stroke event the A-grade winner was Pauline Davis net 73 from runner-up Vicki Brunker 75, and B-grade winner was Ann Bull 72 from runner-up Yvonne Holmes 74.
Wednesday was the usual stableford event. A-grade winner was Andrew ‘Taffy’ Brunker with 37 points from runner-up Geoff Bracken 36, and B-grade winner was David Connolly 34 from runner-up Phil Gatacre 33.
Coming up we have Club Championships continuing, with the second round tomorrow in conjunction with men’s monthly medal.
Tuesday is a 12 holes 2-person ambrose, Wednesday is stableford, Thursday will be stroke and next Saturday is again stroke and the final round of the championships.
Sunday, April 13 will be a ‘Sunday Fun Day’ with a 2-person ambrose event.
Friday nights at the club have been buzzing, with good crowds enjoying the meals, the atmosphere and the raffles. It continues tonight with raffle tickets on sale from 6pm and draws at 7pm. Happy hour is 6pm to 7pm.
