Two of the Deniliquin Athletics Club’s longest standing life members have now been formally recognised.Research conducted for the club’s 50 year celebrations in November revealed newspaper articles which indicate both Ken Greaves and Sue Buckley were made life members in 1987.But club president and fellow life member Leanne Mulham said neither has been added to the Life Members’ Shield, or duly recognised with other shields or trophies. The club rectified the oversight at its presentation night on Friday, with Ken and Sue both on hand to finally be inducted and added to the shield.Full details from presentation night will be in Friday’s edition.
Murphy claims Aussie skipper
Mathoura’s Ray and Marilyn Murphy would have been jumping for joy when their grandson Todd Murphy made his Victorian cricket debut last Wednesday. While Todd has dreamt of taking his first wicket as a professional cricketer since he was a child, he never would have thought the scalp would be that of the Australian Test captain. In his debut against Tasmania at Junction Oval, the off-spinner had Tim Paine caught out on the boundary and finished the day with figures of 1/39 off his 10 overs.Unfortunately his efforts weren’t enough as Victoria went down by six wickets.
Busy weekend
Saturday was a busy day for Deniliquin musician Lachie Downes. In the afternoon he gave a private performance for Daniel Zrajko and Hannah Plant’s engagement party at the Deniliquin RSL Club.Lachie then made his way to play at the Murray to Moyne fundraiser concert at the Deniliquin Boat Club at 7pm, and then had another private performance later in the evening. We hope the vocal chords got a good rest on Sunday after the marathon performance.
Braving the rain
Back on the Murray to Moyne concert, it was fantastic to see so many people head out to the Deni Boat Club to support the event despite the wet and windy weather. While the majority of attendees sought refuge in the clubrooms, the rain did little to deter a small portion of the crowd who parked themselves under umbrellas and ponchos to watch the performers out on the grass area. While Pastoral Times journalist Jamie Lowe was at the concert, he was quite impressed by the quick wit of performer Anna Bowie who chose to perform the song Have You Ever Seen the Rain? by Creedence Clearwater Revival as the skies opened up.
Mystery catch
A rare sight on Sunday night is shining a light on the importance of keeping our environment clean and tidy.A bird — perhaps a pigeon or a small duck — was hanging from the branch of a large gum tree next to the Deniliquin National Bridge by a fishing line.On a nearby branch was a hawk, perhaps working how best to scavenge the remains. We don’t think hawks have evolved enough to go catch their prey using fishing lines, so it is most likely our feathered friend became tangled in the fishing line and died. It’s a disturbing reminder for anglers to make sure they take all their rubbish and tools home with them.
