If you’ve noticed quite a few people looking skyward while walking through the Deniliquin Waring Gardens, don’t be alarmed.

A cauldron of bats - possibly up to 100 - have taken up residence in two of the trees which sit adjacent the toilet block on the Cressy St side of the park.
Our staff spotted the bats earlier this month, and we’ve since had quite a few locals ring or pop in to our offices to make sure we know they are there.
Some have remarked the visitors are a little noisy and smelly, but everyone seems to be enamoured by them anyway.
They’re proving to be a bit of an added attraction to the CBD too.
We’re not exactly sure why so many bats have taken up residence in the gardens.
If you can shed some light on this attention-grabbing migration, please reach out to Daniel Briggs. Email daniel.briggs@denipt.com.au or call 5881 2322.
CSIRO book launch tomorrow
Congratulations Iain Goodway.
Iain has won himself a copy of the book Science in the Outback: The Life of CSIRO at Deniliquin and its People, which will be launched in Deniliquin tomorrow.
The book was offered as a giveaway by its author, Allan Wilson, who was a scientist with the CSIRO in Deniliquin.
His book charts the history of the CSIRO in Deni from establishment in 1945 to its closure in 1990.
Tomorrow’s launch will be held at the Deniliquin RSL Club’s Mountbatten Room.
Open to the public, it will begin at 4pm with Deniliquin & District Historical Society president Lindsay Renwick as MC.
The launch will be followed by a CSIRO staff reunion, with some expected to travel from Queensland, South Australia, the ACT and parts of NSW and Victoria to attend.
Goals at the end of the rainbow
It was fairly miserable conditions for sport on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half of the Deni Wanderers’ game, however, the sun did come out and there was even a faint rainbow sighting.
The rainbow was, unfortunately for the Wanderers, down the far end of the field and above the Golden City White goals.
It must have provided some good luck for the visitors, who managed seven goals in the second half.
On a brighter note, the Wanderer’s lone goal also came down that end in the first half, with a superb counter-attacking team goal finished by Bruce Maunganidze.
A full report of the game will be in Friday’s edition.
