Bella Knox, Emma Wettenhall, James Gatacre and Jack McGrillen were in Sydney earlier this week for the Victor Kelly Cup.
Playing on the Sydney Olympic Park courts, they put in some stellar performances, but fell short to eventual winners Tamworth Primary School.
Regardless of the result, the young tennis stars had an amazing experience.
They even had the opportunity to watch some of the Australian Development Squad in action.
Practising on the courts next to them, the squad included Cruz Hewitt - the son of Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, who attended the sporting event.
The Deni North students won their way into the final after a semi-final win against Milton Primary School.
The skilled Deniliquin side took a five to three set win.
The Tamworth side was a bigger challenge, resulting in a “nail-biting” competition that came down to the last game.
While they put up quite the fight on the court, Deni North fell short in the final game.
“Despite the loss, the kids should hold their heads high and be proud to be runners-up in the Victor Kelly Cup,” team coach Jon Gatacre said.
“Congratulations to James, Emma, Jack and Bella on an outstanding performance in Sydney and showing great sportsmanship throughout the tournament.”
Deniliquin North School principal Mark Peterson, who also went to Sydney with the side, said the whole school was proud of their efforts.
“They showed amazing determination,” he said
As well as representing Deniliquin North School, James, Emma, Jack and Bella are also members of the Deniliquin Junior Lawn Tennis Club.
Gatacre said the program is open to newcomers, with play held Saturday mornings during summer. The competition begins in term four of the school year, and concludes in term one.
