A resident of Orana Residential Aged Care, Russell will be joined by family and friends for his big day.
The PT has been invited to come along, so check back on Friday to see how it went.
Russell is a WWII veteran, and is a recipient of a number of medals for his service.
To have made it to the age of 101 is a wonderful feat in itself, but to have served the country in the encounters he did, makes the birthday particularly special.
Happy birthday, Russell, from the Deniliquin Pastoral Times team.
Deni Lights Up map
With more than 30 registrations for the Deni Lights Up competition this year, local families will be thoroughly entertained this Christmas.
But it may make voting for the People’s Choice a little harder.
Decorated homes and businesses appear on the map, including those who have registered just to spread the joy and not to vie for prizes.
Registrations closed yesterday, and are listed on the handy Christmas lights map on page 15 of today’s edition.
The map also includes your people’s choice voting form, or you can vote online at https://forms.gle/tNQJ4DhZzEtWGuvw6.
Deni Lights Up is a Deniliquin Business Chamber initiative, proudly sponsored by the Deni Ute Muster, Deniliquin Pastoral Times, 1521/2QN Edge FM and Ray White Deniliquin.
Fireworks a welcome show
Fireworks were heard around town Saturday evening, giving locals plenty to talk about.
Organised by Purtill Group in honour of their 50th anniversary celebrations at the Deni Golf Club, the Purtill family invited the community to witness the spectacle from Deniliquin Memorial Park.
An estimated 100 people took up the offer, as well as those already at Memorial Park for a Deni Rhinos social function.
One PT reader contacted us Monday, asking us to express her gratitude - which she is sure is echoed by other members of the community.
“A big thank you to the Purtill Group for giving Deni such a brilliant fireworks display,” she said.
“Young, old and indifferent were held transfixed by the colourful spectacle.”
Up and down weather
How are you coping with the changes in the weather?
Warm days, stormy days and blistering temperatures, we’ve had them all since the start of the month.
The prediction for the next few days is low 30s, but the mercury will rise closer to 40ºC again by the end of the week.
And who knows what the long-range summer forecast has in store for us.
Regardless of whether it’s a normal summer’s day or an official heatwave, Murrumbidgee Local health District urges caution.
Its Public Health Unit director Alison Nikitas said severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people.
“Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre,” she advises.
“Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
“If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.”
Xmas with the Rams
A Christmas barbecue will be held at the Rams oval tonight, with all players, sponsors and supporters welcome.
It will coincide with training, and the club’s extraordinary meeting at which they hope to elect a president.
The fourths will train from 5pm to 6pm, with under-10 and under-12 footballers welcome to join, and seniors and thirds from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
Netballers are also invited to join training if they wish.
The bar will be open from 5.30pm, and the meeting will start at 6pm.
