Rotary supports health research

Yarra-Mul Rotary Club in March 1987 supported a group of Knoxfield Rotarians who cycled from Melbourne to Canberra to raise money for the Rotary Health Research fun.

The money raised by the energetic Rotarians and those who joined them on their way will aid research into Cot Death prevention.

The ride commenced in Melbourne on March 14, 1987. The cyclists who rode into Yarrawonga Mulwala on March 14 were given a great welcome in front of the Mulwala Civic Centre by local Rotarians and others.

Among those who welcomed the cyclists were Corowa Deputy Shire President Cr Keith Barber, Mr Ken Jasper MLA and Cr Keith Head who represented Yarrawonga Shire.

Local Rotarians Brian Cooper and George Nicholds rode with the team on the last 20 km into Mulwala.

Yarra-Mul Rotary Club supported the cycling team with donations totalling about $600.

The cycling teams were guests at the Rotary Club meeting at Mulwala Services Club that night at which the guest speaker was Sir Hubert Opperman, the team’s patron and coach.

Sir Hurbert, 82 accompanied the team to Yarrawonga, Corowa and Albury.

Sir Hubert, holder of many world cycling records, was also a force in Federal Parliament for 17 ½ years.

He was a Cabinet Minister until 1976, and a high commissioner to Malta from 1967 to 1972.
