The SES still has not issued an official alert for Deniliquin, but localised flooding is occurring.
The rising water has covered every inch of the sandy beach at McLean Beach and part of the car park, with only the new railings around the boat ramp and signage visible.
It won’t take long for the river to be lapping up against the toilet block and barbecue area.
Edward River Council has confirmed that further sections of the Beach to Beach Walk are now under water.
Areas of the walk closed at the time of going to printe yesterday are:
- At McLeans Beach, between Butler Street and the boat ramp,
- Behind the Peppin Heritage Centre, between the Ute on a Pole and the George Street access, and
- Entry to the Island Sanctuary, closed at the George Street access.
The public is encouraged not to use these sections of the Beach to Beach Walk, and to stay out of flood water in general for their own safety.
At the time of going to print yesterday, the river was 4.16m and rising.
Minor flood level at Deniliquin is 4.6m.
How does $1.4 million sound?
A Hay mother had the answer to that question Saturday night when she checked, and double checked, her winning 36 game quick pick ticket purchased from Westend Plaza Lotto in Albury.
The winning entry was one of four division one entries nationally.
She claimed a lovely $1,413,575.51 prize from the Saturday, August 20 Lotto draw number 4287.
The Hay local told thelott.com “it’s mind boggling” when talking about her win.
She had been staying with family members on Saturday night when she decided to check her numbers.
Feeling unsure of what she was seeing, she got the other members of the house to check and they confirmed she had indeed won.
Having played lotto for many years the woman was over the moon to win.
Apart from a few house repairs she would like to carry out, the rest will be spent helping her children.
Long Table cafe hosts 28 five year-olds
What a wonderful experience for 28 five year-olds from Deniliquin South School who had fun attending a cooking class at the Long Table Cafe.
The day started with some piklets for morning tea followed by a farm tour, with some hands on opportunities along the way.
These included collecting fresh eggs from the chook house, milking the goat and herb garden taste testing.
The students also got to make their own pasta and have pizza for lunch.
Cafe and farm owner Kath Smits said “each and everyone of them were so very well mannered, and were very keen to learn every task”.
Raffle Quilt out and about
After a break enforced on members of Deniliquilters and Friends by COVID, their raffle quilt is back out and about.
Raffle tickets for the quilt are normally sold prior to the quilt show, which due to uncertainty caused by COVID, won’t be going ahead this year.
The quilt being raffled was made by Deniliquilters and Friends member, the late Gail Simpson.
Gail was well known in quilting circles around the region, even publishing a quilting book, Fabric Fandango, that quilters find most useful.
Funds from the sale of the raffle will be used to benefit membership.
The group is finding it difficult to cover the rising costs of running the Tuesday stitching day, including an increase in rent, any extra income will be most welcome.
The group meets every Tuesday at the Multi Arts Hall, where an active group of members enjoy quilting and associated crafts.
The group is happy for anyone who is interested to join.
