“The rice industry is facing ongoing challenges due to water policy, increasing input costs and highly variable water allocations, which are driving the need to improve water use efficiency and profitability,” the Rice Extension Team say in the introduction of the report.
“Average industry water use has a downward trend decline of almost two megalitres per hectare in the past ten years.
“However, even though we are hitting record yields of over 16 tonner per hectare, in all valleys, the average yield has not increased.
“Using current varieties, irrigation technology and agronomic practices, the top yielding 20 per cent of crops are 2-3 tonne per hectare above the average in every season, variety and region.
“This demonstrates a potential for dramatic yield increases.
“Throughout this document, we hope you'll find there are opportunities for us to build a robust, resilient and highly profitable rice-based farming system.
“Learning from each other through collaboration and knowledge sharing, while showcasing the crops and tools available to make informed and timely decisions, is the role of Rice Extension and the purpose of the focus sites.
“We hope the annual summary will provide relevant and purposeful information to accurately capture the CY24 rice season and the exciting work done by everyone to make our industry what it is today.”
