Whenever there’s a fire truck out on the road it turns heads, regardless of whether it has lights and sirens blaring.

But the one that hit the roads on Saturday drew more attention than usual.
It was the grand unveiling of the 1936 Dennis Ace fire engine, owned and restored by a local syndicate of retired firefighters and other connections.
A project more than 40 years in the making, the fully restored fire engine was brought out of its shedding on Saturday and driven through town to the Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW fire station.
There, the owners met with the Pastoral Times (and many other interested parties) for a bit of a photo shoot and interview.
While the design of the truck itself was enough to turn heads, the bright red paintwork could not be missed either.
And those who got a good look would have noticed part-owner and driver Ron Cartwright was wearing an old school fireman’s uniform as well.
The full story on this restoration will be in Friday’s edition, but we couldn’t help but bring you a little sneak peak in today’s edition.
Talk to a tourist
With the start of spring and stunning weather to boot, we noticed a few more unfamiliar faces than normal were out and about late last week and into the weekend.
So on Friday we stopped to ‘talk to a tourist’, and caught up with with Dot and her dog Luna.
The pair were enjoying the gardens beside the Peppin Heritage Centre, while Dot’s husband Barry popped inside the visitor centre for some information.
Barry and Dot have been through Deni many times but are yet to stay.
But Dot says “that will change very soon”.
“We are from Melbourne and went to our daughter’s 50th birthday in Cook Town. We are heading home,” she said.
“We have been travelling for more than 10 years on longer trips.
“Now we will do shorter stays, and Deni is on our list to stop over and have a good look at the beautiful town.
“We are having a look at the The Depot museum today before we head off.”
Time for a catch-up
The Deniliquin Breast Cancer Support Network will be holding it’s morning tea catch-up this Thursday.
The group will meet at Cruzin* Diner in Hardinge St, Deniliquin at 11am.
Those in attendance have the opportunity to have a cuppa and a chat.
It is for everyone affected by breast cancer and all are welcome to attend.
Spring has finally sprung
Picnics, dog walks in the park and group catch ups in playgrounds - they were all on the agenda over the weekend.
The start of spring has brought with it delightful weather, which saw a notable increase in people using the open spaces in and around Deniliquin.
The birds are also loving the conditions, and as we have warned in previous columns you need to be wary of swooping magpies and ducks with ducklings.
There also seems to be a slightly larger flock of ibis than usual who have taken a liking to the Deniliquin Waring Gardens.
They like to get a little close, and appear very imposing, but seem to be harmless.
While we have all been enjoying soaking up the sun’s rays and warmth, don’t put away those jumpers just yet.
The evenings and early mornings are still a little icy, and as we all know the weather can turn quickly at this time of year.
But it won’t be too long until we’re all complaining it’s too hot.
