In the latest update on the service to the Deniliquin Local health Committee, Deniliquin renal unit nurse manager Alana Tilders said additional staff have also been recruited.
“We also now have a chronic kidney disease nurse,” Mrs Tilders told the meeting.
“This is a fantastic service, as the nurse is able to see patients early in their disease process, and implement appropriate management that can slow down disease progression by almost 50 per cent.
“Patients can discuss this service with their GP, or can self-refer by phoning 1800 654 324.”
The update also touched on the regular renal clinic with a visiting nephrologist from Royal Melbourne Hospital.
“It is life-changing for these patients to be able to stay in their own community to access these services,” Deni LHAC chair Lynda Barclay said.
The renal unit report was just of the updates presented to LHAC members at the October 21 meeting.
Mrs Barclay said in another, Deniliquin facility manager Ginny Lange reported that the ‘Stepping On’ program is returning to Deniliquin on October 31.
“This is a seven week program aimed at improving balance and stability, and reducing the risk of falls.
“Highlighting the need for this programme, the first intake is booked out, but those interested can still register their name for the second intake which will begin in February. Ring 1800 654 324 to register.”
Mrs Barclay also highlighted the ongoing success of the Health Access program.
“This is an after hours GP Telehealth service, free to any residents in the Deniliquin community.
“It is available from 6pm to 10pm weeknights, and from noon to 4pm on weekends and public holidays.
“It is a great option if you are unable to get in to your regular GP, or don’t have a regular GP, and your situation is not urgent enough to require a visit to the emergency department. Appointments can be made by calling 1800 272 767.”
