Enzo and fellow North School student Will Turner were both competing in the championships Thursday last week.
All power was lost across Deniliquin right when Enzo’s age group were being tested on their spelling knowledge.
His Zoom connection to the competition was cut as a result.
Not able to reconnect, Enzo was almost disqualified from the competition.
But teacher Carly Crothers whipped out her mobile phone, and the adjudicators allowed Enzo to continue.
Gaining his composure, Enzo correctly spelled the crucial final word - ‘sacrosanct’ - and was crowned the champion for his age group.
“The adjudicators said they had never had such a hard fought final, and that Enzo was a very deserving winner,” Mrs Crothers said.
“Enzo will go to Sydney to compete in the state final in term four.”
William put in a valiant effort in his Stage 2 competition, but did not progress far enough to make the state finals.
He came in equal sixth after going out in the sixth round, on the word ‘municipality.’
