That is the message from Murray River Police District, which will be participating in a state-wide long weekend police operation.
Deniliquin-based Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said there will be a focus on both traffic and licensing compliance, and overall general safety.
“Deniliquin Police remind the community that Australia Day long weekend is a moment to celebrate and gather with family and friends,” Chief Insp Fuller said.
“It is also a long weekend, which means that the potential for road crashes and people losing their lives on the roads is there.
“Double demerits and a focus on road safety will be in place over the long weekend from 12.01am Friday to 11.59pm Monday.
“If you are going out, please make sure you have a plan to get home safely - such as a designated driver, or make plans to stay over so you don’t have to drive.”
Chief Insp Fuller said the importance of making “good choices” also extends to those choosing to celebrate at public venues.
“Make sure you look out for your mates and if you are asked to leave a licensed premises, make sure you comply,” he said.
“There are significant fines if you ‘fail to quit’ - refusing to leave when staff ask you to go.
“We hope everyone has a safe and good Australia Day and enjoys the long weekend.”
