Each year some of us make new year’s resolutions. However, very soon those good intentions start falling by the wayside. Why do we make new year’s resolutions? We make them because we would like to see some changes. We would like to learn from our past mistakes. We would like to leave behind unhelpful (or destructive) patterns of behaviour. With the beginning of a new year, we would like to have a certain amount of newness in our lives. We make new year’s resolutions because we would like to keep the hope alive that somehow this year will be different.
In reality, the real need is not for a new year, but for a new you. New years will come and go and most often very little changes. If this new year brings a new you, that’s the change you need. For if by the grace of God, we are given a new heart, a new mind, a heavenly perspective, then even our current circumstances will be better. In fact, sometimes God will use difficult circumstances to change you. If you are experiencing difficult circumstances then turn to God in faith and trust. Believe that Jesus is with you in the midst of your difficulties. Trust in Him. Have faith!
The Scriptures assure us: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV). The truth of that verse is that in Christ, a new creation has begun. When you come to Jesus you will begin to progressively change. You don’t become totally different overnight, but by the Spirit, Christ is changing you. He is moulding you after His own image. He is making you a new person from the inside out. That is what you really need. So, as you consider this new year, the real question is not your current circumstances or what is wrong in your life, but your relationship with God.
New year’s resolutions come and go. Generally, they go because you are relying on your own power to accomplish them. If you turn to Christ, He will give you the power to see those good changes come to pass. By His Spirit He can truly make all things new. I speak from experience. He transformed my life. So, I know He can transform your life — if you will humbly come to Him in faith and trust!
Blessings!
