With the Bush Fire Danger Period due to start in the Mid Murray Zone on October 1, agricultural burns are occurring in larger number before the permit period begins.
With that comes an increased risk of escaped burns, like seen in the Bullatale area last week.
Mid Murray RFS district coordinator Gerard James said there’s also been an increased number of calls to fire authorities for false alarms.
“Last Friday, about 3pm, we were called to a property of Barham Rd, about 10km from Deniliquin,” he said.
“When we arrived we discovered it was a stubble burn, which was under control but was not registered with us.
“Landholders should not forget to notify fire agencies at least 24 hours before you start any burns.
“Landholders must also notify their neighbours of any plans to burn.”
The Mid Murray RFS has indicated that the fire risk in the region is high, with grass is rapidly drying out and seasonal higher winds already starting.
All pile burns must have a fire break of at least 6m, and you must have sufficient water supply nearby.
