Amy Doherty, Ellie Gavel, Fletcher Campion and Stella Bashford made up the winning foursome, competing against other district schools.
The competition forms part of the Premier’s Debating Challenge, and the North foursome blazed through the competition undefeated.
Their first opponent was Mathoura School, on the topic ‘Should parents be allowed to leave children in Years 5 and 6 and above unsupervised in the evening?’.
By way of coin toss, Deni North had the affirmative and all students were given one hour to prepare their points and rebuttals.
The team’s knack for speaking and reasoning continued in round two, where they came up against Deniliquin South School.
The question posed ‘should primary school students have a three day weekend?’, with Deni North advocating against the notion. Again, Deni North students showed the edge, and were declared the winner by the adjudicator.
North met South School’s second team in the third round, where they argued against the topic ‘should schools start each day with a 30-minute mental health and wellbeing session?’.
North’s main arguments were that it would take time out of the curriculum, and it was not the responsibility of teachers to implement such a subject.
The students will now compete at a regional level. Details of that competition will be finalised once COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
