A new mural intended to celebrateculture and connectedness has been unveiled at St Michael’s Catholic School.

Members of the school community gathered on Thursday morning to see the mural, created on the wall of the canteen, for the first time.
Also there were special guests from Yarkuwa Aboriginal Knowledge Centre, Deniliquin High School, as well as parents and ex-students.
Principal Nick Braybon started the proceedings before handing over to Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa woman Chantall Barnes for the Acknowledgement of Country.
Mrs Barnes and Indigenous students of St Michael’s then removed the covering on the piece together, before standing proudly beside the masterpiece.
Mr Braybon said Mrs Barnes and local artist Jo Nathan led the art program over a period of 12 months, resulting in the “beautiful Sorry Sun Mural”.
“From the initial idea to its commencement in October, and now to the incredible artwork you see today, this mural represents so much more than its vibrant colours and intricate hand print designs,” Mr Braybon said.
“It symbolises the growth, commitment, and shared understanding of our community, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together.
“I want to take this moment to acknowledge two incredible individuals, Chantall Barnes and Jo Nathan.
“Their dedication to this project has been extraordinary, with countless hours of guidance, encouragement, and hard work alongside our students and staff.
“Their efforts have ensured this mural is not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.”
The mural is an example of unity, with all the different hand prints representing different walks of life and backgrounds that constitute the St Michael’s community.
It is also a testament to the school, and the commitment of staff and students, to meaningful change and learning in the space of reconciliation.
This was also demonstrated with NAIDOC Week celebrations earlier in the year, and a greater focus on Acknowledgement of Country.
