Located in the Riverview Estate, the Rural Fire Service was initially called to respond.
After noting some of the materials might be hazardous, including the possibility of asbestos plaster, its volunteer firefighters requested the assistance of the Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW brigade’s Hazmat (hazardous material) team.
Fire services were alerted to the blaze, about 9.30am.
Upon arrival, the RFS said the blaze was already about 5m in diameter and took on the appearance of a bonfire.
Firefighters noted that it is illegal to burn housing material, especially if it is suspected to contain asbestos.
Asbestos waste can be disposed of at the Deniliquin landfill depot.
But it must be disposed of according to guidelines, and the landfill operator must have at least 24 hours notice before the material is taken to the waste depot.
More details on commercial and residential asbestos removal can be obtained from Edward River Council’s website, at www.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au/Services/Rubbish-Bins-and-Recycling/Asbestos.
The Riverview Estate blaze was one of three fires requiring intervention since late last week.
A weekend of high fire danger, both authorities were on high alert.
On Thursday, January 2, the FRNSW brigade was called to a backyard fire in Harfleur St, Deniliquin.
Another rubbish fire, it was reported to have gotten out of control about 3.50pm.
Firefighters were on-site for half an hour, responding with one truck and crew.
The following day, Friday, January 3, the Deniliquin RFS responded to a transformer fire in Boxwood Crt, Deniliquin.
The RFS were alerted to the fire at 6.45pm, they were on-site shortly after.
The blaze was extinguished by 7.20pm, after which the site was handed over to the electrical provider to complete necessary repairs.
There was no-one injured, and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
Due to the high fire danger warning at the weekend - promoted by temperatures in the 40s and strong winds - all fire permits were cancelled.
Landholders have been praised for working to the conditions, and have been asked to continue checking conditions and for alerts issued by the RFS as the summer period continues.
