More lakes open for Murray cod fishing this spring

Victorian anglers now have more options for Murray cod fishing this spring, with Lake Eppalock, Lake Nillahcootie and Cairn Curran Reservoir open year-round.

This change comes as the annual Murray cod closed season takes effect in most rivers and lakes north of the Great Dividing Range and the Yarra River.

“The Murray cod closed season is really important in many rivers and lakes to allow these treasured native fish a chance to breed, but that's not the case in several impoundments we heavily stock like Eppalock, Nillahcootie and Cairn Curran,” Victorian Fisheries Authority director of fisheries management Luke O'Sullivan said.

"Our record-breaking stocking program means we can open these waters up year-round which is great news for those of us who love our cod fishing.”

The Murray cod closed season applies from September 1 to November 30 in most waters north of the Great Dividing Range and the Yarra River. Fisheries Officers will educate anglers on regulations, including the Murray cod slot limit of 55-75cm and a bag limit of two in open lakes.
