Mayrung students' paddock adventure

Mayrung Public School students have gone into the Easter break with a greater understanding of where food comes from, with the continuation of a now annual program.

The Paddock to Plate experience was held in conjunction with local farmers, SunRice, Murray Irrigation and Nutrien Ag Solutions.

Students and staff alike had the opportunity to learn about the agricultural process of growing rice and witnessing first hand how rice is harvested in a paddock.

Michael Pisasale from Murray Irrigation Limited spoke about the important role water plays in the rice growing cycle.

Mark Groat from SunRice’s grower services provided an informative discussion on the different varieties.

Riley Hamilton from Nutrien Ag Solutions then took the students on a closer look at the physical rice growing process in the paddock, demonstrating how the plant thrives in the natural environment.

The school expressed a special thank you to Mayrung grower Stephen Ball for organising the program, SunRice for sponsoring the day, and to Lyn Rose for volunteering to drive the bus.

Mr Ball initiated the school’s paddock to plate project in 2022.
