Ken aims to bring fresh perspective

Ken Bates.

“I believe in a council that listens, understands, and acts with the community’s best interests at heart. It’s time for a change that brings a fresh start and renewed focus on what really matters to our town.”

That is the reason Ken Bates gave for his decision to stand in the Edward River Council elections next month.

And it looks like he, and others with similar motivations, will get their wish.

Of the 14 candidates nominated to fill nine seats on the council, only three have served this current term of council.

As a lifelong resident, Mr Bates is deeply committed to the community.

He said he intends to bring unwavering integrity, a wealth of experience, and a genuine understanding of local needs to the council.

Over the next month, he hopes to share his vision on how to build a stronger Deniliquin.

“It’s clear that a fresh perspective and a new approach are needed,” he said.

“I am committed to creating a council that is approachable and responsive to the community’s needs, both immediate and with a view to building a thriving future for this great town.

“Like many others in the agricultural industry, I have weathered challenges in my career and understand the importance of resilience and adaptability - traits that would serve me well on the Deniliquin Edward River Council.

“I’m eager to listen and best represent this great community.

“Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me any time.”

Mr Bates can also bring to council intimate knowledge of the healthcare needs of the community, due to his personal experience with our local health facilities and wife Jenni Bates’ 40 years of dedication to the local health sector.

He recognises both the strengths of our services and the areas where improvements are needed.

Having raised two daughters and now enjoying the company of five grandchildren, Mr Bates also possesses a multi-generational view that keeps him connected and engaged with the community he values so highly.

Born and raised in Deniliquin, Mr Bates’ roots run deep in our town.

After completing school locally, he dedicated his professional life to supporting local agriculture through his work as a self-employed soil surveyor.

His career spans decades, including significant roles at the Commonwealth Bank, Druitt Earthworks, and Shell Deniliquin before establishing his current business, Advanced Soil Mapping, in 1993.

Mr Bates’ connection to Deniliquin extends beyond his professional life.

He has been a stalwart supporter of various local organisations, including the Deniliquin Ute Muster, as a chairman and board member at Yallambee, the St Michael's Primary School Council, the Genazzano Boarding School Council, and as president of the Deniliquin Hockey Club.

He is also a long-standing sponsor and loyal supporter of a range of local football clubs, the Deniliquin Boat Club and the Deniliquin Swimming Club.
