Input sought for Moama rainfall-runoff study

Murray River Council has received funding from the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water to investigate rainfall and runoff around Moama.

A rainfall-runoff model will be developed to improve understanding of at-risk locations during major storms, such as the January 2024 event.

In Moama, big storms can cause issues due to runoff, called ‘major overland flow’, making its way to the Murray River.

Council is responsible for managing major overland flow as well as the Murray River’s riverine flood risk.

This study is at the data collection and review stage, with consultant WMS Engineering gathering information, including local knowledge.

The community is encouraged to contribute to the information by providing experiences of local overland flooding and areas with drainage issues through a questionnaire as well as at a drop-in session.

The community information drop-in session is on Wednesday, August 28 from 5pm to 7pm at Moama Bowling Club’s ‘The Venue’ room.

Residents are encouraged to bring photos on their phones, USBs or memory cards of inundation, ponding and drainage problems. Community members interested in the study or with knowledge of past issues are encouraged to attend.
