Members of the RSL Sub-branch and the local public gathered at the Deniliquin Waring Gardens war memorial.
The day marked the 57th annual Vietnam Veterans Day.
This year also marks 50 years since Australian troops returned from Vietnam.
Veteran and sub-branch secretary Mick Morrissey delivered a speech reminding those in attendance of the lives lot during the conflict.
A traditional moment of silence was taken as the flag was lowered to half-mast by Sergeant Tom ‘Sarge’ Cheeseman.
Father Tim Foggo delivered a moment prayer before the flag was raised.
Two calls in one night
For a few weeks now our Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW team has had little to report.
But the firefighters were required twice in quick succession on Thursday night.
The first was to a fuel leak at the Hardinge St shopping complex.
One appliance was dispatched to attend the scene with five crew on board.
Upon arrival at 5.13pm, they discovered fuel would leak if the parked car’s engine was running.
“We advised the owner not to drive or move the vehicle from the location until it had been checked by a mechanic,” brigade Captain Martin Smith said.
“We called a mechanic to the scene to check the vehicle.
“We also spread Spagsorb to absorb any remaining fuel on the ground.
“Once the mechanic arrived we left the scene in the hands of the owner and the mechanic.”
While returning to the station about 5.50pm, the firefighters came across a car crash at the Hardinge and Harlfeur St intersection.
“We were asked to render assistance,” Capt Smith said.
“There were two trucks and seven crew on scene to assist with patient handling, with the police and ambulance.
“We also cleaned away and debris on the road.”
Brush and Brew with feathered friends
More than 35 painters attended the second Brush and Brew event held by Deniliquin South Public School.
Participants were greeted by South School staff as they enter the hall ready to paint according to the days theme which was feathered friends.
The attendees are also treated to grazing boxes and drinks equivalent to attending a high tea.
Edward River Art Society (ERAS) member and South School teacher Jackie Kerry said the event came about because the school was wanting to hold a fundraiser, but “doing something we would all enjoy”.
“We provide the equipment, our P&C made the grazing boxes and staff have been invaluable,” she said.
“Myself, Jane Bradford and Katelyn Braine all offer painting advice and tips during the sessions.
“After food, painting, music, lucky door prizes and friendly conversations, everybody leaves with a finished artwork which they selected.
“We like to offer multiple stimuli, or participants can bring along their own subject to paint, providing it fits with our theme,” she continued.
“It is a real team effort and a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday.”
