She will be discussing eating habits and how they can influence our health in a positive or negative manner.
The talk will be held Wednesday, August 7 from 10.30am to noon at Community Health in Macauley St, Deniliquin.
Healthy eating is one of 14 health topics being explored as part of the ‘Lifting Health Outcomes’ project from the Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Committee.
This topic aims to highlight that diet - related chronic diseases are a major cause of death and disability among Australians.
LHAC chair Lynda Barclay said poor diet can increase the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
“We need dietary advice that is based on the best scientific evidence on food and health. This will allow us to make healthy food choices,” Mrs Barclay said.
“Jemma has many years experience helping people of all ages form healthy eating habits.
“While this talk will touch on the Australian Dietary Guidelines, it will particularly focus on tips and tricks to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.
“It will include ways of preparing a simple, delicious and healthy meal when cooking for a single person or couple; including utilising some smart supermarket buys to make the whole process easier.”
The government funded website eatforhealth.gov.au is a great resource for those looking for further information regarding a healthy diet.
It highlights that many diet-related health problems in Australia are due to:
• excessive intake of foods that are high in energy, saturated fat, added sugars and/or salt but relatively low in nutrients (eg fatty takeaway foods, cakes and biscuits, chips and sugary drinks); and
• inadequate intake of nutrient-dense foods, including fruit and vegetables, legumes/beans, and wholegrain cereals.
“Our August talk will include choosing nutritious foods, food shopping tips, and quick and easy meal ideas,” Mrs Barclay said.
“Jemma will also have some helpful resources for people to take home with them, and will discuss how our nutritional needs vary depending on our age.
“As always the talk will conclude with time for questions, and morning tea provided by our hospital auxiliary Naponda.”
