The first stage of work to deliver improvements to the traffic network through Deniliquin’s busy commercial precinct will start this month with construction of a new larger water main on Hardinge Street.

Latter stages will include the provision of a median strip to improve safety, new parking bays and pedestrian crossings.
The Hardinge Street Road Construction Project is jointly funded by the NSW Government and Edward River Council.
The project will deliver the reconstruction of a 936m section of Hardinge Street (Cobb Highway) between Ochtertyre and Harfleur streets.
Edward River Council is delivering the first phase of the project, which started this week, to start on a new larger water main on the supermarket side of the street between Ochtertyre and Wood Sts.
The project will be carried out in stages, with machinery and work crews moving on site to prepare for construction of the new larger water main.
The rest of the project work will start later this year and will include:
• renewing the road surface
• adding a new concrete median strip and turning lanes to improve road safety
• installing new kerb and guttering
• establishing new marked parking bays
• introducing pedestrian crossings for safer foot traffic
• installing an upgraded stormwater drainage system
• adding landscaping with greenery to improve the street’s appearance at the conclusion of the project.
Independent Member for Murray Helen Dalton said such infrastructure investments in towns like Deniliquin are “critical for the growth of rural communities”.

“My hope is that with these improvements the economy of Deni will be stimulated and confidence in the retail precinct will continue.
“Hardinge St will be a safer, more efficient way for traffic to pass through the town and for people to access their homes and businesses.”
Edward River Council Mayor Ashley Hall agreed the planned upgrades would “make such a difference to this important part of town”.
“Fixing up this section of Hardinge St is not just about fixing the obvious problems with drainage and potholes, but it has been an opportunity to redesign the road to make it safer for everyone,” he said.
“This area is the busiest in Deniliquin with trucks and caravans travelling through, locals doing their shopping, and very few places for pedestrians and cyclists.
“It was crucial that we looked at designing the road.”
Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend an information session or get in touch with council to learn more about the project and the changes it will bring, such as to traffic flow and parking.
Draft plans are available to view in council’s Customer Service Centre and at Edward River Library, with information sessions at various times throughout the project.
The first drop-in session will be held at the library from 4pm to 6pm on Wednesday, April 30.
